There has been a settlement at South Ockendon since ancient times, and it is in the Domesday book as ‘Wocheduna’. The church on the Village Green is St Nicholas of Myra which is Norman and Grade I listed. Also on the Green is the 14th century tavern The Royal Oak which is Grade II listed. A windmill which was built in 1820 collapsed in 1977, but there are plans to rebuild it.
